Synopsis by GoodReads:

The outbreak began in New York. Within days the world descended into chaos as the infection spread to every corner of the globe. Across Britain, millions of people are told to leave the less defensible villages, towns and cities for the safety of one of the enclaves being established around the coast.

For George Tull and the other residents of the Waverly-Price Retirement Home, evacuation is not an option. Finding the staff have left, George has to choose between trying to save those he loathes, or abandoning the woman he loves to an uncertain fate.

Good Stuff:

George Tull is a 69 year old retiree who lives in a retirement home with bunch of other residents. George is the youngest of ’em all and he named them “The Living Dead”, which is ironic as the Zombie apocalypse breaks out later. There is only one person who George cares about in that place, Mrs. O’Leary and she is bedbound. The staff doesn’t cares about any of them.

This is a short story, a prequel to “Surviving the Evacuation”. This book gives us a glimpse into how the vulnerable and elderly cope with an apocalypse. After the apocalypse breaks, the retirement home and many other prone areas receive the notice for evacuation by the government. According to the notice, everyone must be eligible for the evacuation and if they are not medically fit, they will need a signed letter from their retirement home so that the government could send vehicles to pick them up.

One morning when everyone woke up in the retirement home, they found out that the staff has left, with most of the food and medicines. No one told the retirees about the evacuation and the letter. George found the letter in one of staff member’s office and thought if he and Mrs. O’Leary left now, they can make it. But Mrs. O’Leary cared about everyone and she wouldn’t leave everyone else behind. So, George decided to go to one of the staff member, Mr. McGuffrey’s house and look him up there because he felt someone was in the house.

Sadly, McGuffrey was infected and that is where everything starts. I will keep this review spoiler free. So, if you haven’t already read this book, go get a copy now. You can also get this book on Amazon Kindle for free – http://www.amazon.com/Surviving-The-Evacuation-Book-0-5-ebook/dp/B00FH8LB5S

Bad Stuff:

There wasn’t anything bad in this book really. Just that it was a little boring for me so I wanted it to end soon and it did *lucky me*.

Overall Impression:

For a short story it managed to be surprisingly touching and really made me care about the main two characters. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
